The Blue Sky Maritime Coalition's Role in Maritime Sustainability

The goals of the nonprofit Blue Sky Maritime Coalition include creating actionable plans, accurate measurement methods, and realistic timelines that will accelerate the transition of North American waterborne transport toward net-zero greenhouse gas emissions, according to coalition CEO David Cummins. Prior to joining Blue Sky in 2021, Cummins spent almost 36 years with Shell Oil, first as a chemical engineer, then in various commercial and strategic management roles that he describes as “getting into people’s heads and solving impossible problems” — excellent preparation for the mission he’s now undertaken. As head of Bechtel Global Logistics, Stephen Spoljaric is under steadily increasing responsibility to decarbonize the global EPC’s entire transport and logistics supply chain. Bechtel is collaborating with its partners providing logistics services and with its customers to achieve net-zero emissions together. In this discussion, Spoljaric will draw out Cummins on the needs, challenges, and opportunities that the transportation and logistics industry must address on the way to achieving net- zero emissions by 2030.
