Shippers and Sustainability: Carving a Path to Decarbonization

Tuesday, 1 March

3:15 pm - 4:00 pm (PST) / 01/mar/2022 11:15 pm - 02/mar/2022 12:00 am

2021 saw beneficial cargo owners stepping into the conversation and leading in ambition around shipping decarbonization. Through initiatives such as the Cargo Owners for Zero-Emission Vessels (coZEV) 2040 Ambition Statement and the Getting to Zero Coalition’s Call to Action for Shipping Decarbonization, BCOs are publicly committing to ambitious decarbonization goals and pushing the shipping value chain to accelerate the pace of decarbonization solutions. Featuring BCOs that have signed onto the coZEV Ambition Statement, in which they set a public target to only use zero-emission shipping by 2040, this session will answer questions such as:

• How are the corporate decarbonization goals of climate-leading BCOs changing related to maritime shipping? What is driving the surge in ambition?

• How should carriers and 3PLs prepare now to meet the growing expectations of climate-leading BCOs regarding shipping decarbonization? In particular, how can they get beyond efficiency measures with current fuels and prepare for the adoption and scaling of zero-emission technologies? What criteria should they be using when assessing potential future fuels and technologies?

• How can BCOs and other stakeholders across the shipping value chain work together to accelerate this transition, for example by building confidence for investment in zero-emission fuels and technologies that BCOs will find acceptable from a climate and cost perspective; and by engaging with policy-makers about supportive measures that can make zero-emission shipping cost-competitive as quickly as possible?
