In some ways, it seems ocean freight visibility — never mind multimodal, end-to-end visibility — is stuck in a version of Groundhog Day. Hundreds of millions of dollars have been funneled into visibility solutionsover the past few years, building upon the foundations of incumbent providers the past two decades. But a common refrain from buyers is a sense of dissatisfaction, that they would have expected the available solutions to have progressed further by 2023. At the heart of the search for better visibility is the underlying data. No single entity has control of all the data needed by cargo owners to monitor and impact global shipments. Aggregation, integrations and partnerships are needed to stitch together the different data elements. Systems are needed to clean the data and put the data in context. There's also the issue of whether data provided by carriers — essentially the student grading itself — is enough, or whether IoT devices are needed to truly take the next step. In this session, two providers of hardware-based solutions, a key provider of ocean visibility data, and a 3PL will discuss what it will take to go from "OK" to "great" when it comes to the data that powers much-needed visibility.
