TPM Academy: Freight Forwarders and NVOCCs — How They Operate and How to Select One

Does any BCO have an international logistics team that couldn’t use a hand? There is an entire industry of intermediaries — that’s freight forwarders and NVOCCs, to you and me — that make a business out of supporting international ocean transportation. This TPM25 Academy module will explore the intersection where the various services that intermediaries provide meets the different needs BCOs have. Sometimes they align and sometimes they don’t, so the key is to know the difference. Led by Lori Fellmer, vice president of transportation and carrier management at specialty plastics and chemicals manufacturer Basstech International, the session also will explore the pros and cons of outsourcing various tasks and what sort of a partner might be most beneficial for a BCO’s unique needs. In today’s wildly changing ocean freight market that has seen the introduction by ocean carriers of comprehensive suites of online tools, including dynamic pricing and spot booking, as well as enhanced scrutiny of NVOs’ named-account activities, BCOs’ traditional perspectives on the role of intermediaries is worth a closer look.
