TPM Academy: Implementing a Transloading Strategy

Transloading has steadily gained in popularity for importers moving goods through the West, East and Gulf coasts. A convergence of factors is supporting this, including ocean carrier pricing designed to terminate containers at the port of discharge for rapid repositioning to Asia to capture high import freight rates. But other factors play a role also, including risk mitigation and uncertainty around product demand that compels importers to postpone inventory allocation decisions using transload, as opposed to committing containers to a final destination through an Inland Point Intermodal (IPI) rail model. The trend can be clearly seen in the numbers: the percent of import containers arriving at Los Angeles-Long Beach that move inland via intermodal rail dropped to 23% in 2022, from 33% in 2019 and 38% in 2014, according to the Alameda Corridor Transportation Authority. This TPM Academy session will analyze the latest trends in transloading, when the practice makes sense, and how it can lower costs for importers.
