Carl Marchese

MatchBox Exchange (MB)

Founder and Managing Director

After spending 13 years as CEO of one of Australia’s leading container transport operators, Carl Marchese saw an opportunity to advance the container logistics industry that was suffering badly from the profitability impacts of terminal and depot bottlenecks. This led to the inspiration to create the world’s first open market digital platform for the re-use and exchange of containers between trucking companies, freight forwarders and shippers.

With digital innovation and collaboration as its driving principles, the MB platform is now operational across 11 countries in the APAC region, supported by 18 ocean carriers and a large network of truckers, freight forwarders and shippers who use MB’s neutral platform to help them reduce their trucking costs, improve their productivity, and avoid terminal/depot bottlenecks.

Street Turns: An Obvious Solution that Struggles for Adoption

Street turns, container triangulation, matchbacks. Whatever you want to call the process of connecting an unloaded import container with an available export shipment outside a marine terminal, the concept has confounded the industry for decades. In a vacuum, there can be few ideas that sound more reasonable or impactful from a cost, environmental, and resource usage perspective. But in practice, it has been hard to drive adoption, due to a range of factors. Technology isn’t necessarily the constraint as much as competitive and operational misalignment, as well as the reality that matchback initiatives need an owner to drive adoption. In this session, four logistics industry veterans and technology experts in various regions discuss why street turns haven’t taken off, why adoption varies in different markets, and what can be done to drive broader use in the future.
