Mike Hatfield is a seasoned logistics professional with 10 years of industry experience, having worked on the freight forwarding side with NNR Global Logistics and Expeditors, and now in house at Berlin Packaging as a leader on the international logistics team. This diverse background has provided him with a unique perspective on the logistics industry, allowing Mike to identify opportunities for optimization and cost reduction across the entire supply chain. Currently, as Sr. Manager of Global Logistics at Berlin Packaging, Mike oversees a complex supply chain across multiple regions and plays a critical role on ocean, air, and drayage procurement strategies. In addition, during the pandemic, he lead an initiative to educate colleagues and customers on market conditions and provide guidance on how to adapt to the changing landscape. Mike is a Detroit native, attended Benedictine University where earned his Bachelor’s degree and played football for four years.

    The third-party intermediary market has long been divided between non-asset and "asset-light" logistics providers, and there are advantages to both models for logistics companies and shippers. What do shippers need to consider when using asset-based brokers, and where do they best fit? When is it best for a broker to use an owned or leased fleet? If there are advantages, what are the pratfalls to avoid? This panel will explore how we can move from non-asset and asset-light to “asset-right” or even better, “asset smart.”
