When it comes to controversial supply chain topics, it doesn’t get much more heated than detention and demurrage. The issue itself has frustrated shippers for years, but with skyrocketing freight rates and unrelenting cargo backlogs, D&D is under a microscope like never before. With no end in sight to the chaos in the maritime supply chain, shippers and their third-party logistics providers need to focus more intently on managing the timely pickup and return of ocean containers. This interactive session, led by longtime logistics educator and former Lakeshore Learning Materials executive Dan Gardner, will explore traditional best practices, as well as present new tactics and technologies that help to minimize the impact of D&D fees. Viewed from the perspective of both shipper and 3PL, the presentation will analyze detention and demurrage in a variety of import models that include container yard-to-container yard moves, inland point intermodal, and transloading. Dan also will provide insight into the new Ocean Shipping Reform Act of 2021 and explain what it really means to the ocean shipping community.
