The Port of Virginia is the No. 1 rail port on the East Coast. It is located within one day’s drive of two-thirds of the nation’s population, served by 50-foot-deep shipping channels and has on-dock, double-stack rail service. The port regularly serves vessels in excess of 14,000 TEU and is more than halfway complete with their $700 million expansion project to increase annual capacity by 40 percent by 2020. Dredging began in December 2019 to bring the port’s channels to 55 feet deep and 1,400 feet wide to create safe, two-way traffic for ultra-large container vessels. Work will be complete in 2024.
