While Flexport has garnered a huge amount of attention for using venture capital to fuel its ambitions to turn the logistics industry upside down, freight visibility provider project44 used the pandemic to accelerate its own global ambitions. One can see project44 as the polar opposite of Flexport in terms of approach — a neutral data and infrastructure platform as opposed to Flexport's digitally enabled operator model. In seeking to create connections to every transportation carrier and facility across modes and regions, project44 has planted a target directly on its back. CEO Jett McCandless wants project44 to be the "category king" in real-time visibility, but the market remains competitive and fragmented. In addition, longstanding issues around data black holes, modal connectivity, and data quality still plague the market. As Jett has noted countless times, the company has barely started solving these long-term multi-dimensional problems. In addition, economic headwinds and an easing of supply chain bottlenecks are putting pressure on every venture-backed company to perform, pressure that differs greatly from the heady days of 2021 and early 2022.
